Why KDP Rejected Your Cover (and How to Fix It)

A rejected KDP cover is frustrating, but it's rarely about your design — it's almost always print geometry. The file has to be a single full wrap at the exact size KDP expects, with bleed off every edge and nothing important in the wrong place. Here are the seven usual culprits and how to fix each.

1. The file is the wrong size

KDP needs one full-wrap file: back cover + spine + front cover as a single image, sized for your specific trim and page count. A front-only image, or three separate files, gets rejected.

Fix: the full-wrap width is (2 × trim width) + spine + 0.25" and the height is trim height + 0.25". Use the full-wrap cover generator to get the exact size, or the spine width calculator if you only need the middle number.

2. No bleed

Bleed is the 0.125" of artwork that extends past the trim line so the cut never leaves a white sliver. A cover sized to the exact trim, with no bleed, will be flagged.

Fix: extend your background art 0.125" beyond the trim on the top, bottom, and outer edges.

3. Wrong spine width

Spine width depends on page count and paper type — so a cover built before your interior finished, or with a guessed page count, will have the wrong spine and text that wraps onto the front or back.

Fix: recompute the spine after the interior is final: pages × caliper (0.002252" white, 0.0025" cream, 0.002347" premium color). Rebuild the wrap with the correct number.

4. Spine text on too thin a spine

KDP won't allow spine text below roughly 79–100 pages, because thin spines can't hold legible type without bleeding onto the covers.

Fix: remove spine text if your book is under ~100 pages, or accept a blank spine.

5. Content in the safe zone

Text or key art placed too close to the trim edge or the spine folds risks being cut or creased.

Fix: keep important text and logos at least 0.25" inside the trim edges and away from the spine folds.

6. Something in the barcode area

KDP prints a barcode roughly 2" × 1.2" in the bottom-right of the back cover. Put art or text there and it's covered — or your cover is rejected.

Fix: leave that zone clear. Tools that generate the wrap for you mark it automatically.

7. Low resolution

Covers must be 300 DPI at full print size. A front image pulled from the web, or an ebook cover reused at screen resolution, will look fine on your monitor and fail at print size.

Fix: start from a 300-DPI source. At full wrap size a 6×9 book is around 3,800 × 2,775 pixels.

The fastest fix

Most rejections are several of these at once, because the underlying problem is the same: a design tool that doesn't do print geometry. The reliable fix is to build the wrap from your front image plus trim size and page count, so the size, bleed, spine, safe zones, and barcode area are all correct before you upload.
