The Wolves that Watch

The Wolves that Watch blends the rich texture and landscape of rural family life in Northern Michigan with the tribulations of brutal rape. Sarah is at a cross roads. Having fled New York and an abusive man involved with her mother, she must spend a year of her life in a back woods country town totally foreign to her. As she begins to heal from her trauma she develops a friendship with Nick, Native American ex-con, who is also at a cross roads in his life. Nick having lived through the hard lesson of prison is determined to never go back to prison. Meeting Sarah is the first good thing that has happened to him in his life. He knows he isn’t good enough for the lovely, talented girl that he can’t stop thinking about. But he begins to make decisions for his life based on what he things will make him a better man, a man that may someday deserve a girl like Sarah. But his criminal friends aren’t going to let him go that easily. Nick and Sarah go about healing from their individual traumas until one chilly afternoon when Nick’s old friends decide it’s time to send him back to prison. Now they have the horrors of a shared trauma to heal from, complicated by fears that the law may turn against Nick. Both of their extended families can only stand by and watch, but sometimes that kind of support is enough. As Nick’s step- father tells him, “We are the wolves that watch.”
