Peek inside the hyper-observant, Ivy League-bound brain of Mari Thompson by reading her top secret blog, MarisMusings.Net. She’s a smart, black, sixteen-year-old girl, just on the cusp of fitting in, and she has a website full of anxiety-riddled thoughts to prove it.

Reeling from her parents’ separation, Mari adjusts to her new school by tutoring her frustratingly lazy neighbor and obsessing over his dangerously handsome best friend. Alongside her BFFs - a pop music-obsessed Mormon and a foul-mouthed jockette - Mari thinks she could almost be happy. It’s just that her father is dating a young blonde, her mother is guzzling red wine like Kool-Aid, the in-crowd expects her to be having loads of steamy sex, and she can’t shake that curious impulse to speak her mind whenever she sees the boy next door. After a very public heartbreak destroys the little social status she’s finally acquired, Mari must overcome her endless insecurities by making one decision that nobody can ignore.
