About
This album presents the most noteworthy works from the Russian Museum collection of portrait miniatures. It includes works by the enamel painters Grigory Musikiysky, Andrei Grigorievich Ovsov, Petr G. Zharkov and Dmitry Ivanovich Evreinov (18th century); miniatures on ivory by Gavriil Skorodumov, K. Novoselov, Augustin Ritt, Stepan Shchukin, Alois Gustav Rockstuhl, Nikolai Argunov, and Pavel Mikhailov (2nd half of the 18th to early 19th centuries); miniature portraits by the outstanding artist Vladimir Borovikovsky, and works by the Russian miniaturists Mikhail Zatsepin, Kirill Golovachevsky, L. Kriukov, Michail Ivanovich Terebenev, Evgraf Fedorovich Krendovsky, Karl Karlovich Hampeln, P. Rossi, P. Volkov, and Evgenii Zhitnev (covering the period from 1800 to the mid-19th century, when portrait painting in Russia was at its height). The album also presents some works by Sergei Chekhonin, who in the early twentieth century tried to revive the forgotten technique of portrait miniature in Russia. Also included here are miniatures by western European masters, such as Jean-Baptiste Isabey, Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Jean-Baptiste Paulin Guérin, and Anthelme Francois Lagrenée of France; Nathaniel and Andrew Plimers of England; Peter Edward Stroehling and Alexander Molinari of Germany; Moritz Michael Daffinger and Emanuel Thomas Peter of Austria; Domenico Bossi of Italy; Cornelius Hoyer of Denmark; Jozafat Ignacy Lukaszewicz of Poland, and many others. The life and work of the majority of these artists were connected with Russia. The great variety of works reproduced in this album provides a broad panorama of portrait miniature art in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
