Patchwork Metropolis

In 1989 the young Dutch architect Willem Jan Neutelings developed a project for the area between Rotterdam and The Hague, proposing his personal reading of the urban form called "Patchwork Metropolis". In the dual role of provocative manifesto and rigorous analysis of a precise historical and territorial context, the patchwork discourse passes through many pre-eminent themes of the contemporary - the figure of the fragment, the peripheral condition, the territorial structure of the metropolis - investigating the structure and functioning of the model neo-liberal urban. Thirty years after the writing, Neutelings' work has not exhausted its relevance, proposing itself as a valid instrument for interpreting the territory in which we live and foreshadowing new development scenarios.
