The school with a difference
About
"'I have a big piece of news for you. For the first time in history, children are being asked not to go to school'. So opens a mother's letter to her daughters, away at their summer camp, in September 1943. For the place in France under the Germans, and the school yearwhich follows is like no other. Odette, sixteen, and her younger sister Yvette, leave behind parents and baby sister Danie for the village to which their school has been evacuated. Lessons are in a garage, or in a part of the village store, pupils are boarded in local homes. The story which unfolds is one of mounting tension. It shows petty privations accepted with common sense, it shows making-do and managing in a world of shortages and substitutes. It shows, too, that there is no substitute for love, courage and endurance.
