영조말 편찬된 구지舊誌를 바탕으로 하고 경술국치 이후 달라진 행정체제를 반영하여 편찬된 장성군 읍지이다. 범례에 이어 군명ㆍ건치연혁ㆍ위치ㆍ분야ㆍ지세ㆍ강역ㆍ산천 등을 소개하고 있다. 사마司馬ㆍ음사蔭仕ㆍ유림ㆍ충절ㆍ효행 등 인물에 대한 소개가 많다. 1927년 김용순金容珣ㆍ변승기邊昇基 등의 서문과 김요익金堯益ㆍ변진욱邊鎭旭의 발문이 있다. 판심 윗부분에 차례가 표기되어 있고, 서두에 시대표시가 있다.
