Circles of Dignity

Deeply challenging to the religious and social status quo, this work searches for a new understanding of religion's role in our time of massive social, economic and geopolitical change. Guide by his remarkable experience with South African indigenous groups and popular religion, the author shows how marginalized people read the Bible and how their "local wisdom", or "incipient theologies", offers new perspectives on power, tradition and God, as well as new notions of ministry, Church and religion's role in the public sphere. Leveraging the insights at the margin to displace the centre, this work is a blueprint for a socially transformative theology.
