An Enemy Old and New

A woman. An ideology. A civilization.In a world where people can move things without touching them through a force called "essen", Essential is a civilization that has recently undergone rapid change. Twenty years ago, the self-titled "Inventor" used a newly discovered facet of essen to take control of the civilization. In place of the former theocracy, she instated four classes - Innovator, Thinker, Worker, and Laborer - that decided every resident of Essential's amount of freedom. Now, though the Inventor has grown more complacent, everyone has become inured to her absolute rule, the past a distant memory.Even Anki Worker, her former (hated) roommate in school.At least, that's what Anki thinks. But when a mysterious appearance stirs up old grievances, Anki's neighbor and closest friend, Gretna Worker, and Anki are drawn into rebellion. As their movement progresses, the past reasserts itself and Anki learns her resentment hasn't been buried quite as deeply as she'd thought.
