Back in Those Days

This book tells some of the stories, both sad and happy, of the way law enforcement was back in those days. It is told from the viewpoint of a police officer's wife. It was a special time back in those days and I hope my husband's forty-two years of service as a police officer helped make the streets of Greenville, South Carolina a little safer. I believe they did. Harold Charles Jennings enlisted in the Navy as a young man, just out of high school during World War II. At war's end, Harold returned home to Greenville, South Carolina. In 1946 he embarked on a career in law enforcement which became his life's work. -- Dedication, Preface. Gladys Perry Jennings (1927-2020) was a Greenville native, the youngest daughter of a respected entrepreneur, who was president of her high school class and a 1948 graduate of the Woman's College of Furman University, where she majored in literature. Following World War II, she married Harold C. Jennings (1922-2016), a Navy veteran who served the Greenville Police Department for 42 years and retired as police chief in 1987. Most of the 107 brief chapters in this book are anecdotes from Harold's years on the police force. Though, like most self-published books, the presentation is amateurish, Gladys Jennings writes well enough and ably communicates her vivacious personality. Unfortunately, many of the sketches lack dates that would be helpful for additional research, and there is no index. -- Dr. John Matzko, Bob Jones University.
