"L'exposition Le Théâtre des Passions (1697-1759), Cléopâtre, Médée, Iphigénie ... explore la théâtralité comme principe poétique et pictural dàns la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle. Dans la lignée du Traité des passions de l'âme de Charles Le Brun, quatre peintres français, Antoine et Charles Coypel, Jean-François de Troy et Carle Vanloo, deviennent les interprètes d'une peinture reposant sur l'artifice théâtral. À l'opposé des fêtes galantes et des pastorales rocailles, ils inventent un autre XVIII siècle, exaltant la fureur des grandes tragédies classiques par la peinture d'histoire. Leurs drames exacerbés rivalisent avec ceux des plus grands auteurs (Racine, Corneille) et compositeurs (Lully) afin de renouveler le grand genre . Les héroïnes antiques et bibliques telles Athalie, Médée, Cléopâtre ou Iphigénie ... tiennent un rôle central dans ces tableaux théâtraux qui constituent un moment important et jusqu'alors peu connu de l'histoire de la peinture française."
