Mindspeak/Hearthspeak (Bloodsong #4)

by Sandy Nathan

About
On the worst day of her life, theoretical physicist Dr. Clarisse Hull is denied tenure and fired by one of the world’s most prestigious universities. They say her research on alternative universes is “New Age twaddle.”

Most hurtful and frustrating is the fact that she can’t show them her real research results; the government owns them. She can’t tell them what she really does; the government owns her, too.

Heading for home, her husband, and sons, Clarisse takes a step–and ends up in a bizarre reality. Its her home town, Palo Alto, CA, but in the 1980s, not 2016.

A cowering and emaciated young man approaches. “I’m here to take you home.”

They walk through a slash of light and into a vast white warehouse. Roving spotlights create blinding glare, obscuring the hundreds of hostile young people lurking there. They close in, hurling threats.

She discovers her research was right: alternative universes exist and they aren’t necessarily fun and games. She has landed in the mother of them all. She'll have to fight to get free, fight to avoid the future the world's denizens have planned for her.

Clarisse decides she will do anything to get home. Along the way, she finds betrayal, adventure, and the love of her life.
