Unaccustomed Earth: A Thematic Study

This work is about how Jhumpa Lahiri’s characters in (Unaccustomed Earth )toss between the culture, and focuses on the lives of the children, who've grown up in the American Education system, have sometimes married non-Indians, and yet cannot escape the burden of parental traditions. This work aim to acquaint the readers with the Indians living in exile, away from their home and their families. Notable among such stories is the title story of Unaccustomed Earth where Luna's father feels the same nostalgia. One can find the experience of the exile which her characters go through.These stories mainly dwell on relationships. There are problems in husband/wife relationship, problems in child/parent relationship, and many a time her characters have the emotional vacuum within. This work is focused on various themes like, ‘Human Relationships’, Class and Community’, and Gender Perspectives’.
