About
"The Crimson and the Gray" reviews the glorious sports history of Washington State University from its first athletic contest, which resulted in a shutout victory for the WAC baseball team. Learn about early WSU football; three of the first four teams were undefeated and teh miracle team of 1906 was undefeated, untied, and unscored upon. Read about the exploits of "Hack" Applequist, "Biff" Bangs, "Bobo" Brayton, Hugh "the Phantom" Campbell, "Bull" Durham (who later became an admiral), the two "Docs," "Froggy," "Ike," the "Moose of the Palouse," the "Silver Fox," and hundreds of other sports greats. Put them together with other Cougars who have roamed the Palouse Hills and you have the zaniest, most fun-filled three-ring sports circus you are likely ever to discover. "The Crimson and the Gray" is packed with stories of exciting games and heart-stopping moments and is the second in a series of Washington State University Centennial Histories. Richard B. Fry worked at Washington State University for thirty-three years, retiring in 1985 as Manager of the News Service. He spent thirteen years as Sports Information Director for the Cougars, serving through a turbulent period in the school's athletic history.
