Articles cover the origin, nature and characteristic properties of magnetic fields in and around the eight planets in the solar system. Similarly, the often surprising magnetic properties of other objects, such as the Galilean moons of Jupiter, as well as asteroids, are reviewed. The history of measurements of magnetic fields around solar system bodies is also thoroughly covered. The origin of magnetic fields in the diverse planetary dynamos is described in several articles, based on the distinctive features of the interiors of the terrestrial and giant planets.
