About
In a prequel of sorts to his father Michael Shaara's 1974 epic novel The Killer Angels, Jeff Shaara explores the lives of Generals Lee, Hancock, Jackson and Chamberlain as the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg approaches.

Shaara captures the disillusionment of both Lee and Hancock early in their careers, Lee's conflict with loyalty, Jackson's overwhelming Christian ethic and Chamberlain's total lack of experience, while illustrating how each compensated for shortcomings and failures when put to the test.

The perspectives of the four men, particularly concerning the battles at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, make vivid the realities of war.

How does Jeff Shaara’s framing of Robert E. Lee’s internal conflict over loyalty—specifically his agonizing choice between his home state of Virginia and the United States Army—reframe your understanding of the leadership decisions made at the onset of the war?

  2. 2

In what ways does Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson’s deep religious faith and fatalism shape his actions on the battlefield, and how do you reconcile a man of such intense piety with the brutal realities of warfare?

  3. 3

Winfield Scott Hancock and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain represent very different paths into the military life; how does the contrast between professional military ambition and academic/intellectual idealism influence their approaches to command?
