Law of Cosines exists because mathematicians need a way to find the measurement of a missing angle in a triangle where only the three side lengths are known. In oblique triangles, there are many relationships that exist among the sides and angles. In Part One, the understanding needed for the Law of Cosines is solidified by the proof for the first formula. Remember! No memorization! Just understanding! After working through Part One and “Seeing” where the formula comes from you will not need to memorize the three Laws of Cosines. You will “know” and “see them” in your brain! In Part Two, you will use the Law of Cosines to solve triangles and application problems and in Part Three you will use Heron’s Formula (an SAT Subject Test favorite!) to find the area of an oblique triangle only knowing the three sides and no interior angles.
