The authors of this book start from the idea that the technical regulation of markets is not objective, since any 'technical' decision reflects an ideological approach and has (positive and/or negative) social consequences. Both international law and European law impose very significant constraints on the legal framework governing markets and limit the sovereign powers of states to regulate them. This situation has been exacerbated by the measures imposed by the EU to alleviate the economic crisis. They have called in question structural elements of the constitutional framework of the member states and are raising tensions with the fundamental rights of citizens. It seems of the utmost importance to research various thematic vectors that have allowed us to determine whether there has really been such a general erosion of the European social and political model, and to what extent the international legal framework reinforces this trend: the deterioration of economic and social rights, the instrumentalization of citizens as hostages of credit institutions, a decrease in the ability of individuals to determine their own destiny in democratic elections, a relaxation of environmental standards to reduce energy dependence or as a consequence of the norms that regulate international trade, or the marginalization of democratic conditionality and human rights in trade and financial relations with third countries. Ultimately, this book's objective consists of identifying what is the position of the individual and of its citizenship rights vis-à-vis the markets.
