About
Abstract: Common sense information on the role of dietary factors in preventing osteoporosis is presented for the general public, and especially for women. This disease, resulting in bone disorders and fractures, is more prevalent than diabetes in (it affects 25% of) postmenopausal women. Topics include discussions on: changes in bones as a function of age; a description of osteoporosis; body regulation of bone mass; risk factors; bone loss detection; prevention; the exercise of care in hormone therapy; and treatment through nutrition, exercise, and selective drugs. Case studies are included. Various dietary aspects are considered, including proper intakes of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D precursor. (wz).
