Bearing her antique pewter teapot, Margaret Binton joins the crowd of hopefuls waiting to show their treasured junk to an expert at the annual free-appraisal day of a great New York auction house. There she runs into her old friend Hannah, who has just brought in an antique coin for appraisal. Minutes later, Hannah is stabbed to death - and the coin vanishes. The police are apathetic, but Margaret is not about to let this outrage go unavenged, especially as she had a good look at the person she's sure killed Hannah.
