As part of this preparation he called for a New Evangelisation. So the New Evangelisation has become a major sound bite in Catholic PR. It has been taken up round the globe by dioceses and religious movements. The aim of this essay is to identify the problem that triggered this call, to see how John Paul II and Benedict XVI have responded to that problem, to analyse it in the light of the background history and current sociology, to identify some new relevant issues and to suggest alternative approaches to a New Evangelisation.
