"First published in 1812, Findley's Observations was a response to an increasingly influential work of radical Presbyterian theology, The Two Sons of Oil. Its author, the Rev. Samuel Wylie, considered the state and national governments of the United States to be immoral because they did not recognize or establish a bond between the ministry and the civil magistracy. In his book, Wylie urged readers to deny the authority of these governments.
