Corona

In 2020, the world was hit by a pandemic. In our country alone, at the time of publication of this book, the number of fatalities was estimated at over ten thousand. The impact of the coronavirus is enormous due to the unfamiliarity with the virus, the overload of healthcare and the social and economic consequences of the intelligent lockdown. It is under these circumstances that photographer Arie Kievit does his work. As an eyewitness, he documents the crisis on a daily basis. How close he is to that is evident from his own story: 'In one of those rooms lay a man I thought: this is not going to last long. He was very old, he was lying on an oxygen hose. Three nurses were putting him to bed better. Very nice, busy girls all in suits who talk to such an old man and take care of him. I found that an impressive image. They're making sure that man does not end up alone. This document shows the crisis through the eyes of the photographer. Placed in chronological order, his photographs tell the whole story: from the seemingly innocent start of carnival in Brabant to the harsh reality of the second wave on the IC. Complemented by testimonies from those involved, the photographs give a human face to the crisis. The book is also an ode to the people who came into contact with the virus most directly: victims and their loved ones, but especially the helpers. Part of the proceeds is therefore donated by the makers to the Red Cross.
