"El autor estudiado es Júlio César de Moraes Carneiro (1850-1916), quien, al ordernarse de presbítero, cambió su nombre al de Júlio Maria. El libro sigue la línea de pensamiento político-religiosa de este autor, convertido al catolicismo y defensor de la doctrina social de la Iglesia después de haber pasado por el liberalismo y el darwinismo social. Pero al estudiarlo se examina también el pensamiento brasileño de la época, en la medida en que se relaciona con el tema. Se afirma, sin embargo, que la preocupación social de Júlio Maria fue de origen teológico, fundada en la esperanza de la segunda venida de Cristo"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
