Le tagalog, ainsi que 125 autres langues et dialectes des Philippines, appartiennent à la grande famille des langues malayo-polynésiennes. Contrairement au malais-indonésien qui a été simplifié par suite de son rôle de langue véhiculaire, le talog a su conserver une grammaire originale.
