Historical commentary. When the Catholic Sir Willaim Stanley surrendered the town of Deventer in the Netherlands to Spanish Forces he was roundly condemned as a traitor although his Catholic freinds and associates described the surrender as an act of conscience. Cardinal Allen, himself an exiled English Catholic, sets out in this book to justify the surrender on religious grounds.
