August C. Gottwald was born in 1840 in Streigau, Bavaria. His parents were Franz Gottwald and Louisa. He married Louisa Freyfogle (b. 1856), daughter of Jacob Freyfogle (1817-1872) and Carolina Catharina Rebmann (1813-1857) 3 July 1873 in Richmond, Virginia. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in Germany and Virginia.
