About
Discusses the tragedy of forced conversion and life under the threat of the Inquisition for those who called themselves "baptizadas em pé" (i.e. Conversos). Relates the influx of Jews into Portugal after their expulsion from Spain in 1492, the high entry fees, the enslavement of illegal Jews, the abduction of some 2,000 Jewish children who were shipped to the island of São Tomé in 1493, the decree of expulsion in 1496 and the subsequent forced conversion in 1497 (preceded by a second abduction of Jewish children to be Christianized). Pp. 53-104 deal with the names of Jews prior to and after their conversion. Other chapters relate to the Sephardi diaspora, persecution by the Inquisition, and personalities such as Samuel Usque, António José da Silva, Antônio Serrão de Castro, Gonçalo Anes Bandarra.
