After “The Memoirs of Li Hung Chang”, a biography of the Chinese politician, diplomat and general Li Hung Chang (1823-1901) by the hoaxer, journalist, criminal, and literary forger William Francis Mannix (d. 1920), had been exposed as a forgery, Houghton Mifflin published it again in 1923, this time as fiction. The company enlisted journalist Ralph Delahaye Paine Sr. to write a preface, entitled “The Story of a Literary Forgery.” See Bib#s 4103530/907704/Fr#s 1537-38 in this collection for the 1913 editions.
