Rethinking Online Education Media Ideologies And Identities

"A major transition in communication is occurring whose effects will be evaluated by historians, social theorists, and educational theorists in the future. Existing literacy practices have undergone major changes as they have moved online, and other, new literacy practices have emerged as a result of the extensive use of new technologies. Confronted by a new communicative order (Street 2000), we have experienced firsthand some initial effects of this transition of the World Wide Web became a worldwide literacy practive environment. Global media networks have greatly affected our experiences as human beings and as educators. For instance, in all parts of the world we witnessed live from our living rooms the beginnings of the Iraq War in 2003, becoming spectators of the "shock and awe" military operations. Then, we got continuous updates about the war from the Internet, and we also serached these global media networks, as well as other parts of the Web, for online resources that would help us teach our students about the war." -- Introduction
