Maffei’s local regional chronicle draws heavily on the “Estratto del Camerotto di Volterra” in the Volterran archives, a dubious collection of medieval documents, some of which appear to bear the handwriting of the young Renaissance forger Scipio Inghirami. This work shows how the confusion wrought by Inghirami’s archival forgeries extended even beyond the era of Italian unification. See I. D.
