About

8vo. pp. xii, 347, 24. Signatures: [A]6 B-Z6 2A-2G6. Original cloth. “Chas. Manby Smith” written in pencil on front endpaper. Advertisements on p. [1]-24 at end.

Elusive first edition of 1853 of the anonymously published work by Charles Manby Smith (1804-1880). This highly plausible forgery was long treasured as evidence for printing and publishing activities in the mid-19th century (see the Printing Historical Society’s unsuspecting reprint of 1967 (Bib# 4103485/Fr# 834 in this collection). The work is riddled with impostures, as exposed by Simon Nowell-Smith in 1971 (Bib# 4103486/Fr# 835).
