"This book tells the story of the first 40 years of work in the former Soviet Union to devise, test, and execute a program to dispose of millions of cubic meters of liquid radioactive wastes by deep injection. The main focus of the book, originally printed in Russian, was to document for a broad Russian audience past decisions regarding deep injection disposal of liquid radioactive wastes, including safety aspects, research results, and practical experience gained during creation and operation of disposal systems. However, the Russians' experience in deep injection disposal is proving useful in solving other problems worldwide involving the economic use of the space beneath the Earth's surface.
