About
The arrival, in Barcelona, of the kings of the Habsburg dynasty were always moments of special significance for its citizens, accustomed to their near permanent absence. The city prepared itself conscientiously for the occasion to show itself before the sovereign in all its splendor and possible solemnity. All kinds of festivities were celebrated, such as tournaments and parties, and great ceremonies were held. In this contact between the king and the Barcelonese, different ceremonial traditions came into play: on the one hand, those of the Catalan institutions such as the Consell de Cent and the Generalitat and, on the other, the very one of the monarchy. At this point, the willingness of the parties involved to negotiate was essential, all conditioned by the political context of each moment. This book provides a new vision of the integration of Barcelona and Catalonia in the Habsburg monarchy, from the point of view of the physical presence of the king in the city. The result of years of research in archives and libraries, the author offers a large amount of information that has hitherto been unknown and which undoubtedly renews the debate on the relationship between Barcelona and the king.--Machine translation of back cover.
