"One in five"

This book explored the concept of Adolescent Medicine as a distinct approach -- a relatively new concept at that time in Nova Scotia (and elsewhere in Canada), and put forward possible application of the concept to the province of Nova Scotia. At the time of writing fully 20 per cent of the Nova Scotia population was between the ages of 12 and 20 (hence the title ***One in Five***). This book was one of fifteen or twenties studies and surveys undertaken by the provincial government as part of a comprehensive review of the provincial health care system three years after the introduction of federally cost-shared universal health insurance (Medicare). The principal author was the founding executive director of two storefront youth clinics affiliated with McGill University teaching hospitals, and sat on the board of several youth services in Halifax Nova Scotia while earning a science degree at Dalhousie University.
