"Roger Hilton began his career as a figurative painter but turned to abstraction following contact with artists in Paris and Amsterdam. In the 1950s he was among the most radical of abstract painters along with others associated with St. Ives such as Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Peter Lanyon. From the late 1950s he switched constantly between abstract and figurative painting, including the exuberant nudes that are among his most popular and enduring works. His development of a new form of figuration has been compared to that of Jean Dubuffet and Philip Guston. Hilton moved permanently to Cornwall in 1955."
