Discussion questions for Ô DJELBANA !

Bring these to your book club — or discuss them with readers on Readfeed.

  1. 1

How does the dual timeline—shifting between the Algerian War in 1958 and the academic/suburban settings in France decades later—shape your understanding of how trauma and memory linger across time?

  2. 2

Chafazot is physically present invigilating an exam in Paris while his mind is decades away in the Algerian djebel; have you ever experienced a moment where your external reality felt entirely disconnected from your internal thoughts or past?

  3. 3

The novel hinges on a tragic ambush in 1958 that shatters the lives of the characters; how does Claude Balaize use the backdrop of the Algerian War to mirror the internal conflicts and divides within the characters themselves?
