Comprising pieces written from about 1420 till 1586. With large notes, and a glossary. Prefixed are: An essay on the origin of Scottish poetry. A list of all the Scottish poets, with brief remarks. And an appendix is added, containing, among other articles, an account of the contents of the Maitland and Bannatyne MSS. Volume I.

Poems selected from the Maitland folio and quarto manuscripts in the Pepysian library by John Pinkerton. In the preface Pinkerton confesses to fabricating the second part of the ballad ‘Hardyknute,’ but goes on to perpetrate or perpetuate other forgeries. See also W.A.
