"Richard Champion Rawlins, a twenty-year-old Liverpool cotton broker, sailed to the United States in 1839 to collect his family's share of the estate of his grandfather, Richard Champion, one of whose ships and cargo had been impounded and sold during the War for Independence. He spent three months in New Orleans buying cotton with the legacy and shipping it to England, but he also made the most of a once-in-a-life-time opportunity by staying in America for almost a year to see as much of the country and its institutions as he could.".
