From the nineteenth century on, Colorado attracted many German immigrants, making German-Americans the largest ethnic group of the state. This thesis analyzes the history and the present state of the German culture and language in Colorado. An introductory historical overview of German immigration to Colorado discusses early German settlements and colonization. The second part of the thesis discusses the history of the German language and culture in Colorado, focusing on Coloradan German dialects, selected German publications, the history of German Studies at CU Boulder, and favorable or unfavorable factors for the maintenance of the German language and culture. The third part of my thesis discusses the present state of the German language and culture in Colorado, focusing on language, but all the while drawing many connections to German culture. The conclusion outlines some future prospects and challenges for the German language and culture in Colorado while emphasizing Colorado's German heritage.
