E timpul poate să reafirmăm importanţa literaturii şi să avem curajul de a repune teoria literară în contact cu problemele majore ale lumii în care trăim. Să reafirmăm, în mijlocul celebrării globalismului post-Idee şi al fricii faţă de orice dimensiune universalistă, forma de universalism a literaturii, cea care a creat, cum o spune Milan Kundera, istoria autentică a omului. E o formă de universalism accesibilă doar artei, pentru că ştiinţa sau cadrele politicii în care trăim au cel mult acces la generalizare, la găsirea aşadar a unei identităţi valabile (sau care trebuie să fie valabilă, deci trebuie să fie impusă) peste tot.
