About
This book from the collection 'Lieux de mémoire' offers an original look at the urban development of Brussels correlated with the deployment of the railroad in Brussels in the second half of the 19th century. In the middle of the 19th century, the eastern suburbs of Brussels (Schaerbeek and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode) experienced an unprecedented boom: their population increased exponentially. At the same time, the area of available land decreases. Brussels is then about to be linked to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg by a new railway line, the terminus of which will be located in the Léopold Quarter. This railway line will be a few years later, connected to the Gare du Nord by a short section established in the open air. It is at street level and crosses the municipalities of Brussels, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and Schaerbeek.
