Lovet︠s︡ neulovimogo

Lovet︠s︡ neulovimogo

by G. G. Filippovskiĭ

About
Born in Minsk in 1909, Filippovskii began working at the eminent publishing house Academia in the 1930s. He created illustrations for editions of Balzac, Dickens, Babel and Pasternak; when the Soviet government closed the press in 1938, Filippovskii, like other creative talents, received a stint in the Gulag. He survived those years in camp, partly as a result of rewards of food received in return for drawings. This album of his paintings and graphic art of the 1930s to the 1960s reveals a strong figurative tradition abiding in Soviet art during the middle years of the twentieth century. -- Summary written by John W. Emerich, Bronze Horseman Literary Agency.
