"This book is grounded in political philosophies, which underpin theories of European integration. The book argues that the reason states are prepared to involve themselves in the EU project can be explained through the Kantian civil constitution and Hegelian recognition. These concepts inform European integration theories and provide the basis for the paradoxical nature of the EU in terms of unity and diversity. Indeed, Europeanization deals with these paradoxes in terms of up-loading, downloading and its relationship with European integration theory."
