Dans la seconde moitié du 19è siècle, l'Europe "découvre" le Ruanda ancien. Sa nature, son peuple, ses rois étonnent et ravissent les explorateurs, voyageurs, missionnaires, administrateurs. La plupart écrivent des récits, rédigent des rapports aux familles, témoignent d'une certaine admiration pour le "Pays des Monts de la Lune". L'auteur a exhumé des archives une sélection inédite d'une centaine de ces visions étrangères couvrant un siècle, de 1862 à 1962, date de la déclaration d'indépendance du Ruanda.
