About
In honor of the centenary of Suze Robertson's death (1855-1922), this richly illustrated monograph is published in which her life and work are described in detail for the first time. The publication offers an extensive overview of her oeuvre and places Robertson in the art world around 1900. As is often suggested, for example, is there an influence on contemporaries such as George Hendrik Breitner and on artists after her, such as Piet Mondriaan? The authors base themselves on new source material - including in the artist's archive, which has remained closed for this purpose - technical research into her painting and drawing style and a large-scale inventory of her oeuvre, in which many hitherto unknown works of art were discovered. Get to know this fascinating woman, who as one of the first female professional artists in the Netherlands could count on a lot of opposition. Determined to succeed, she fought for her own place in a male-dominated art world and created the conditions under which she could be successful as an artist. Even though these were not socially accepted. Her art turned out to be just as unique and progressive. The subjects she chose, such as women in interiors, were a means for Robertson to continuously search for a relationship between line and color in various media. Precisely because of her limited choice of motifs, she fully understood her subjects and created room for technical experimentation. Exhibition: Museum Panorama Mesdag, The Hague, the Netherlands (3.4-25.9.2022); Noord-Veluws Museum, Nunspeet, the Netherlands (2.4-4.9.2022)
