La poésie est pour Hashem Shafiq une vision émaillée d'une mission : transformer les choses de la vie en poésie. Il est l'auteur de plus d'une dizaine de recueils poétiques qui font de lui une figure éminente de la poésie irakienne des années 1970. Il vit en exil depuis 1979 et s'est fixé à Londres.
