8vo. pp. 24. Stapled into original printed wrappers, with three minor corrections to one line on p. 6, probably made in-house.
First edition, as reprinted with an explanatory preface from three issues of The Times, of the first significant exposé of the ‘Protocols of the Elders of Zion’ as a plagiarism from a nineteenth-century satire. Comprises 3 articles by the Constantinople correspondent of the Times, Philip P. Graves (1876-1953, half-brother of Robert Graves), Aug. 16-18, and a leading article from the Times of Aug. 18. Graves, the (here anonymous) Times correspondent at Constantinople, had obtained – from a Russian emigré, through the mediation of the future CIA supremo Allen Dulles – a copy of Maurice Joly’s Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu, exhibiting unmistakable parallels with the Protocols, whose authenticity The Times now demolished – concluding (Preface, p. 3), that their correspondent ‘presents for the first time conclusive proof that the document is in the main a clumsy plagiarism’, and (p. 23), that ‘there can be no doubt that the forgery was perpetrated by some member of the Russian Secret Police.’
