About
This amazing book of over 300 pages and more than 500 photos is dedicated to the memory of the brave men of the 39th Battalion who fought in the battle to save Australia. The Foreword is by former Governor General, Major General Michael Jeffery and the Nominal Roll details the 1700 men who served. In mid 1942 in order to stop the Japanese advancing south from New Guinea’s north coast, the 39th Battalion- a battalion of young, Australian militia troops was sent along the Kokoda Track. Here, they found themselves battling alone against an overwhelming Japanese force and they delayed the enemy advance until reinforcements arrived. The delays and casualties inflicted destroyed the enemy’s ability to achieve their objective. Many of the stories are by the men themselves. Australian military history, and Australian military history literature at its best.
