Le Bénin indépendant depuis 1960 est aujourd'hui une démocratie reconnue. Il a connu de nombreux coups d'Etat dont celui de 1972 conduisant à la mise en place par les militaires au pouvoir d'un Etat marxiste-léniniste. Cette phase fut marquée par l'élimination d'éléments gênants comme en témoigne ce récit. L'écriture en a été faite au cours d'une détention politique à perpétuité.
